MAY 1, HANOVER COUNTY, VA — Rickey R. Dandridge, a retired Major with more than 44 years of law-enforcement service in the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, announced today that he is running for Hanover County Sheriff in the November 2026 Special Election.
Dandridge retired on April 30, 2026, after a distinguished career serving the citizens of Hanover County in every major division of the Sheriff’s Office, including Patrol, Investigations, Administration, and Judicial Operations. Rising through every rank during his career, he brings unmatched experience, deep institutional knowledge, and a lifelong commitment to public safety.
“Serving Hanover County has been the honor of my life,” said Dandridge. “I am running because I
believe the people of Hanover deserve experienced, accountable, and community-focused
leadership. I know this office, I know this county, and I am ready to lead.”
For more than four decades, Hanover County voters have not had a contested sheriff’s race.
Dandridge said this election gives citizens a real choice in selecting the next leader of the Sheriff’s
Office.
“For too long, voters have not had a real choice in selecting their sheriff,” Dandridge said. “This
election is about giving Hanover citizens a voice and presenting them with experienced, proven
leadership they can trust.”
Following the retirement of Sheriff David R. Hines, a special election was ordered for November 3,
2026, to fill the vacancy. Dandridge said the race represents an important moment for Hanover
County and for voters who want a sheriff committed to professionalism, integrity, and public trust.
“I know what it takes to lead this office because I have lived it,” Dandridge said. “I know the demands
of the job, the importance of accountability, and the responsibility that comes with protecting our
communities. I am asking the people of Hanover County to place their trust in experience, integrity,
and proven leadership.”
Dandridge said Hanover County is at a crossroads and deserves a sheriff ready to lead from day one.
His campaign will focus on keeping Hanover safe, maintaining strong community relationships, strengthening accountability, and ensuring the Sheriff’s Office remains responsive to the needs of all the people it serves.
“I am grateful for the encouragement and support I have received from community members and
business leaders who believe in my vision for Hanover County,” Dandridge said. “I look forward to
earning the trust and support of the citizens of Hanover County.”
